Recent Soup Reviews Roundup

A plethora of recent-ish soup reviews over the last few weeks, brought together here for your delectation:

Cauliflower & Cheddar Cheese Soup (yes, really!)
My comments on the cauliflower and cheddar soup are as follows:
This soup was quite thick and didn't have a lot of flavour. I normally like a thick soup but this was just stodgy to me although an improvement on the super watery soups of late. This soup was made nicer with more seasoning and black pepper. I give this bland colourless soup 6/10 today and that's because it's sunny outside and I'm feeling extra generous!

Chicken and Sweet Corn
Yum, Yum, Yum! I loved this soup so very much. It was a bit thicker than I normally like it, but I still enjoyed every single bit! Really tasty and for that I give it a 9/10.

Pea and Ham Soup
Oh goodness. The soups just keep getting better. This soup is delicious, hot, perfect consistency and super tasty. It has really generous chunks of ham in there too.

Cream Of Broccoli
Scrumptious, super, special, superior, sublime, syrupy. Just right - a soup amongst soups. 9 and a half out of 10.
Don't go for the White Bean and Pasta soup - it looks like petrol with a layer of oil on the top. You could probably get 20 miles to the gallon if you stuck it in your petrol tank.

Vegetable
This does not taste of vegetable and it doesn't look like vegetable. I don't know what is is but it is extremely yummy - just the right constituency. Almost as good as the broccoli yesterday. 9 out of 10 even though it most certainly is not vegetable.

This again is getting 9.5/10!

Tomato And Roasted Red Pepper
The golden age of soup continues - this is the best tomato soup ever. It comes with a slight bite at the back of the throat which I find strangely pleasant, 9.75 out of 10.

Broccoloi And Stilton
Smooth, silky, sophisticated, sensationsal - yum. 9 out of 10

Pea And Ham
Too thin and too much pea and not enough ham. Tastes okay. As I'm feeling a bit peed off I'll give it 5 out of 10.

Carrot And Corriander
Tastes strongly of carrots. Seems like they put a load of carrots in a liquidiser and then mixed it with wallpaper paste. Extremely nice though! 8 out of 10.

Bubble And Squeak Soup!
This is the worst soup ever in the history of the world - almost (but not quite) uneatable. Tastes like the contents of a dirty bucket mixed with cabbage water. Has a nasty after taste reminiscent of decaying flesh. 0 out of 10. Recommended if you want to have tomorrow off with food poisoning.

Pumpkin & Coconut? No thanks...

John
Pumpkin And Coconut
Totally devoid of any taste at all. Much cheaper to boil yourself a kettle of water and drink that .
2 out of 10.

Jonathan
Jacket Potato
Judging by John's review I did the right thing and passed on the soup in favour of a jacket potato. Which was nice.

Meanwhile, here's a review or two from last week:

Vanessa
Cauliflower Cheese Soup

This soup was quite thick and didn't have a lot of flavour. I normally like a thick soup but this was just stodgy to me although an improvement on the super watery soups of late. This soup was made nicer with more seasoning and black pepper. I give this bland colourless soup 6/10 today and that's because it's sunny outside and I'm feeling extra generous!

John
Tomato And Red Pepper
Consistency just right. Could do with slightly more salt but tastes very nice just the same. 8 out of 10. Coupled with Spicy Meatballs and Penne Pasta this is indeed a match made in heaven just like John and Kylie.

Nina
Italian Veggie & Bean
Satisfying I found - I delved to the bottom though and I had mainly veg and beans… that's the key…!! Needed salt and pepper and a zap in the microwave though, so would give it a 6/10…

Carrot And Corriander...and a potato

John
Carrot And Corriander
Very tasty (like Kylie) with just a hint of spice. Not too thick, not too thin - just right (like Kylie). 8 out of 10.

Jonathan
Jacket Potato (with cheese 'n' bacon)
The normally generously-sized jacket potatoes (still a snip at £1 a time) outdid themselves today with a spud so large that the lid on the container wouldn't close properly. And when I put it down, the weight of the potato caused the container to fall over to one side. It tasted pretty good too.

Nina
Tried the soup...and passed
Well, I went downstairs and had a sip of the lentil and bacon…..
I tried before I buyed!!
And I didn't buy!
JB you should be lucky you didn't get that one…. Your mouth would have been on fire!!!!

Mix 'n' Match

Nick & Jonathan
Garden Pea with Wiltshire Ham
Joint purchase from Tescos - and very good value at £2.03. Excellent flavour which puts the soup of the same name from the usual source to shame. Only minor downpoint was the temperature at which it emerged from the microwave - somewhere between furnace and volcano.

Nina
Leek & Potato mixed with Tomato & Red Pepper!
I tried a sip of the L&P on it's own and thought it was a little bland…. So I've mixed it…. It's texture is quite nice, not too thin…. Good colour now too… slight peppery taste to it - haven't had to add salt - as expected a mixture of tastes - my soup fusion! Not bad - 6.5/10.

John
Tomato And Red Pepper
Seriously good! Not too peppery, not too tomatoey - just right. The Kylie Minogue of soup. Marks out of ten - 9.

(Editor's note: the score for the third soup is 9 out of 10 and not minus 9 out of ten. The ensuing debate about the score, Miss Minogue, spicy soup, and a somewhat questionable comparison of chunky vegetables and a former colleague have been left out of this blog posting on moral and legal grounds).

Vegetable soup/dish water

John

Vegetable Soup
Yuck - tastes like dirty dish water. Come to think of it - dirty dish water probably tastes better. Marks out of ten - minus 1.

(Editor's note: We don't think John liked this soup)

Pea & Ham vs. Mulligatawny

John
Pea & Ham
Delicious - piping hot and a nice balance of pea and ham. Not too thin and not too thick! Marks out of 10 - 9.
JB says yum yum!!

Nick
Mulligatawny
Not a bad soup at all, interesting flavour and a decent temperature. It didn't taste much like mulligatawny but perhaps that would be asking too much. 6 out of 10.

Jonathan
Pea & Ham
A good version of this favourite, complete with a reasonable helping of actual bits of ham in the soup for good measure. 9 out of 10.

Two Soups, a Spud and a debate

Miina
Broccolli & Cheddar
Lovely- creamy and savoury. Thin but satisfying:) 8.5 out of 10

Nina
Broccolli & Cheddar
Rather thin, but don't mind it like that. Think they may have used 'seriously strong cheddar' as you can really taste the cheese, which to me is the best thing about his soup - I am a cheese freak!! I give this soup a 9/10 = could have been a little hotter….. But that's not the soups fault…. The flavour was soupson!!

John takes a different view....
Broccolli & Cheddar
Not the best. Overly cheesy, thin and tepid. Only 4 out of 10. Lentil & bacon is the tops!

Cue debate on the merits of Broccolli & Cheddar soup. And John's tastebuds ("I THINK YOUR RECENT FRIGHT HAS DONE SOMETHING TO YOUR TASTEBUDS - AS FOR IT BEING TEPID… WHAT IS THAT MICROWAVE FOR?!?"). Meanwhile, back at the soup...

Vanessa
Sweet Corn Soup
This soup was divine. Every mouthful I took made me smile. The perfect consistency with little chunks of pureed corn and seasoned just right. Perfect temperature and a lovely part of my lunch! I give this soup a whopping 10/10. Perfect score for a perfect soup!

Jonathan
Jacket Potato with cheese & bacon topping
Another £1 jacket potato - and it's another winner at 9/10
